Scaled Composites Model 437 “Vanguard”

As tactical fighter aircraft continue to evolve, much of the success of any particular model will hinge not just on capability but also on cost and operating economics. To further efforts of lower costs and increase manufacturing and operational efficiency, Scaled Composites developed and flew the Model 437, also utilizing it as a platform to develop autonomous flight software with Northrop Grumman.

First flown in August of 2024, the 437 required only 21 months to progress from a clean-sheet design to flight testing. The impressively short timeframe leveraged rapid design tools, commercial-grade supply chains, and agile manufacturing techniques. The experience created a blueprint for efficient and cost-effective aircraft development.

The 437 continues to serve as a testbed for Northrop Grumman’s Beacon autonomy ecosystem, a flight-testing platform that allows companies to plug in and test their autonomous software in the real world without having to build their own aircraft.
