OA-1K Skyraider II – A Simple, Inexpensive Tactical Aircraft Taking on Complex Missions

Bristling with sensors and armament, one of the first examples of the OA-1K Skyraider II awaits its next flight. Based on the Air Tractor AT-802 agricultural (crop duster) aircraft, it has been modified by L3Harris to provide battlefield support in a rugged, inexpensive package and can operate from unimproved airstrips.

Ample underwing pylons enable the Skyraider II to carry a wide variety of stores, ranging from bombs and guided missiles to targeting and signals intelligence pods, supporting various missions.

Relying on simple, proven technologies to maximize readiness and reliability, the Skyraider II eschews fly-by-wire controls and retractable landing gear in favor of simplicity. The taildragger configuration, for example, enables the aircraft to operate from rough, austere dirt strips and provides the propeller with sufficient clearance to avoid contact with brush or uneven terrain. Additionally, the otherwise outdated configuration eliminates the relatively fragile nose gear and shock-based suspension systems, further strengthening the platform.

While the taildragger configuration significantly increases durability, it also introduces less forgiving landing and ground-handling characteristics. Accordingly, the Air Force Special Operations Command must send Skyraider II pilots through a training pipeline that includes civilian taildraggers – reportedly even utilizing small, piston-powered types to build fundamental taildragger flying skills.

But, with an acquisition cost far lower than comparable aircraft, the ability to take off and land from nearly anywhere, and 35 years of operational experience in the civilian market, the Skyraider II offers a compelling blend of strengths as it begins to fill its military role.
