US Navy CMV-22B Osprey Tiltrotor

A US Navy CMV-22B Osprey tiltrotor approaches the USS George Washington Nimitz-class aircraft carrier while underway in the Pacific Ocean. Intended to replace the fixed-wing Grumman C-2 Greyhound transport plane, the Osprey is expected to fulfill the role of transporting personnel, mail, and priority cargo between land bases and ships.

With its vertical takeoff and landing capability, the Osprey will introduce increased flexibility over the C-2 by operating from smaller ships that lack arresting and launching capabilities, as well as accessing areas on land without runways.

Compared to the Ospreys used by other branches of the military, the Navy variant has an increased operational range, more capable radios, and systems to facilitate passenger loading and unloading.
